OUR PROUD PAST
OUR COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE
Oldfield Kirby Gardner was originally formed in 1881 by John Henry Oldfield, William Hicks Gardner, and Walter T. Kirby. The firm has had a major presence in Manitoba since its inception as a real estate brokerage, property management company, insurance broker, mortgage lenders and investment dealers.
The neo-classic building built by the founding partners at 234 Portage Avenue in 1909 continues to stand today and is a designated heritage building in downtown Winnipeg. Oldfield Kirby Gardner was the real estate firm who brokered the land that Eaton’s and The Bay stood on for decades.
Oldfield Kirby Gardner helped shape Portage Avenue as a major commercial district in the early 1900s and that tradition continues today with our convenient downtown location to serve you.
In the early 1960s, the securities and real estate divisions were sold, while Oldfield Kirby Gardner maintained its presence as an insurance broker.
In 1989 Oldfield Kirby Esau was incorporated to purchase the Winnipeg operations of Dale and Company. George Esau was the catalyst for this strategic acquisition and had previously been a partner with Dale and Company. The purchase was a strategic acquisition as Dale was originally responsible for bringing Lloyd’s of London to Canada and had strong ties to both international and domestic markets.
Combining the strength of these two brokerages made Oldfield Kirby Esau. the oldest general insurance broker in Canada, as Dale and Company was originally formed in 1859.
In 2004, Barber Lumsden Insurance brokers was acquired and became part of the Oldfield Kirby Esau tradition. Barber Lumsden was originally founded by Jack Barber & Bill Lumsden in 1953and was also located in downtown Winnipeg. The acquisition gave Oldfield Kirby Esau an even stronger imprint on the downtown business district. Today, our head office remains at 200-330 St. Mary Avenue.
In 2012, Oldfield Kirby Esau. expanded to acquire Milnco Insurance, a managing general agency. The employees of Milnco Insurance joined the Oldfield Kirby Esau team at 200-330 St. Mary Avenue. This acquisition continues our vision to maintain a dominate position in Winnipeg’s Downtown revitalization.
